Welcome to Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Middle School.
We believe that we must put excellent teachers with great students in an environment which fosters freedom to learn.
Sir Edmund Hillary Middle School adapts both traditional and modern ways of teaching constantly reviewing our pedagogy to improve achievement. As technology evolves, our students also discover different types of learning while our teachers adapt to new ways of educating to improve achievement in this ever-changing world. Ways of assessing along with achievement results are constantly reviewed which help us set necessary targets to move towards the high standards we set ourselves.
Building positive relationships with our students, whanau, and community is important to us and we have an open door policy for any parents or students who need help or would like to ask questions.
This is why our school has some of the best attendance rates in Auckland as we always aim to be above 90% overall. Currently we sit at 93% in overall attendance. Attendance is vital to the success a student has at school which reflects on our high levels of student academic improvement during their time at the Middle School.
Our students often win National and Regional awards with students recently winning National Art Competitions, Auckland Speech Competitions, and winning Media Prizes.
We are also known for our cultural group development culminating in a cultural night in Term 3 every year with hundreds of people from the community attending.
The school places a very strong emphasis on participation in physical activity that supports a healthy lifestyle. Numerous in-school events encourage activity and the majority of sports offer an opportunity for the new participant to build on their own values becoming stronger through success and adversity they may come across during their time at the middle school. Our high performance sport programme is extremely successful and many have gone on to higher national honours. Our teams often win the SEZ championship in numerous sports and place in top three in Auckland which is a tribute to our coaching staff.
State of the art teaching resources are complemented by excellent co-curricular facilities which include a large hall, gym, netball and tennis court, basketball outdoor court and table tennis outdoor areas while teachers are constantly on duty during interval and lunch times watching over our pupils.
The Performing Arts programme in our Middle School complements the achievements in sport. Young musicians have experiences such as the school band with expert music mentors. Young actors build the basic skill set needed within our Media accelerate groups which also encourage skills in Directing and Producing.
Art has had a great history with students performing highly with distinction both nationally and regionally expressing themselves through their own experiences and interests. National awards along with the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust asking our school to contribute to the local Gilbert Road Shops Murals are just some of the recent examples.
The success of Sir Edmund Hillary Middle School students in all areas of school life is underpinned by an ethos of hard work and discipline. Every child is stimulated to set their own goals and expectations whilst given the encouragement and support they need to achieve. As a result the school has a calm and determined tone, but without the closed focus you may be accustomed to in other schools. Success is celebrated and rewarded.
