Music

Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Senior School Music Department

“A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary, whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place.” – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Making that connection is very important in our environment here at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Senior School. We would like to promote that Music is for everyone. The ideas of being unmusical is a concept found only in Western musical traditions. From the moment of our first mother’s heartbeat, we are musical beings. Before we are born, we respond to our heartbeat and to the sounds of our inner world. We are born musical.

In Music at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Senior School music is for students who are seeking for the following

  • connection with their own personal sound world and the sound and the sound worlds of their fellow learners, teachers, whanau and community
  • follow professional music career paths in the canon of historical, social, and cultural musical forms and genres.
  • Contribute informally as audience, participants or leaders in community choirs, assemblies and cultural groups.

In Music at SEHC students learn to be confident and resilient through taking the creative risks involved in performance and composition. Students connect, past, present and future views of the world through their study of many different types of music.

Learning Music provides multiple opportunities for developing a means of creative expression and the skills (such as self-management and problem solving) that every student needs for success in the twenty-first century.
