Welcome to the English Department
The English program at Sir Edmund Hillary Senior School is designed to improve the students’ awareness of the important role that the English language and its literature play in their intellectual, personal, and career development. Essential to the over-all program of studies, the English program emphasizes the development of oral and written comprehension, of critical thinking skills, and of coherence, clarity, and fluency in the expression and communication of ideas. The English program encourages the development of each students individual potential by aiming high, persevering, critical thinking, clear writing, articulate speech, thoughtful decision-making, intellectual risk-taking, and respect for others. We appreciate and understand the differing learning needs and styles of students the English Department and acknowledge the rich language and cultural environment of the Maori and Pasifika ethnicities of our school population.
In English at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate we are committed to presenting a flexible curriculum that sees our learners as central and provides our students with the competence, experience and work habits necessary for successfully undertaking studies in and beyond their schooling. Students are encouraged to regard the two stands: making meaning of ideas or information they receive (Listening, Reading, and Viewing) and; creating meaning for themselves or others (Speaking, Writing, and Presenting) as active and integrated processes. English teachers strive to provide a supportive and positive learning environment in which students can increase their confidence and competence in language use thus enhancing both their life skills and their enjoyment of language in a variety of forms.
All students are assisted to develop their critical understanding and control of the English language. They are provided with a broad range of closely connected learning experiences designed to encourage them to become more confident, thoughtful, discriminating and imaginative communicators as readers, viewers, presenters, writers, speakers and listeners in both formal and informal situations. They are encouraged to recognise and value the diversity of social and cultural backgrounds and opinions in our community and to enhance their self-esteem through confident use of the English language in a variety of contexts for a variety of purposes and are addressed to a variety of audiences. Students are provided with a range of learning programmes to demonstrate their achievement in personal and social learning, making meaning and creating meaning.
All teaching, learning and decision making of the English Department is underpinned by a set of beliefs and values which link to the culture of the school as a whole.
